Volley

What is a Volley in padel?

Ball struck before it bounces; the core net-zone shot in padel.

Definition

The volley is a fundamental shot executed by striking the ball before it bounces—the primary weapon at net position. Volleys range from soft blocks and midcourt volleys to aggressive put-away smashes. Quick reflexes and racket control are essential; volleys end rallies more often than any other shot.

Origin: English: 'volley', from the motion of hitting a moving (flying) ball.

When to use it

Played whenever the ball approaches at net; the higher the ball, the more aggressive the volley can be. Soft volleys keep opponents off-balance.

Common questions

What's the best grip for a volley?

Continental grip is standard; it allows quick adjustments for forehand and backhand without re-gripping.

Should I take volleys high or low at the net?

Take them as high as possible—the higher the ball, the more angles you have to finish the point.
