Volley — Padel Drills

The volley is struck before the ball bounces. Net play is where padel points are won — mastering the volley is the fastest route to improving your win rate.

Technique: step by step

1

Net position

Stand 1–1.5m from the net, weight forward on the balls of your feet. Feet shoulder-width apart, racket held at chest height in front of you. Anticipate — don't wait.

2

Short punch motion

The volley is not a full swing. Use a short, punchy motion — think 'block and direct' rather than 'swing through'. Long backswings at the net produce errors.

3

Racket face stays open for low balls

For low volleys (below net height), open the racket face upward to generate lift and keep the ball in court. A flat racket on a low volley goes into the net.

4

Step into the ball

When possible, step toward the ball with your opposite foot as you strike. This transfers weight forward and adds natural pace without a longer swing.

5

Place the volley, don't power it

A volley placed at a player's feet is more effective than a hard volley at their body. They can block pace; a ball at the feet is physically hard to return cleanly.

Coach tip

Every point you win should start with your team at the net. Every volley drill should reinforce getting to the net and staying there.

Drills by level

P1
  • 1.Wall volley drill: stand 1m from the side glass and volley continuously. Control pace so each ball comes back to a comfortable height. Count consecutive volleys — target 20.
  • 2.Feed and volley: partner feeds balls to your forehand and backhand alternately from the baseline. Play 5 forehand, 5 backhand, then mixed. Focus on short punch, not swing.
P2
  • 1.Cross-court volley drill: both players at the net, volleying cross-court. Point lost when ball hits the ground or goes out. Builds rally-volley reflexes and improves net communication with a partner.
  • 2.Feet volley drill: all volleys must land between the service line and the net. Forces placement precision — no hitting long.
A1
  • 1.Lob-read drill: partner alternates volleys and lobs. You must identify the lob early and smash/bandeja. The split second of read time is the key training point.
  • 2.Chiquita response drill: partner plays a low chiquita from the baseline. You must volley it cross-court below the net tape height — the touch volley. One of the hardest volleys in padel.
