Drop Shot

What is a Drop Shot in padel?

Softly struck ball just over the net; effective against baseline opponents.

Definition

The drop shot is a delicate, short groundstroke or volley that lands softly just over the net, forcing deep baseline players to sprint forward. It's a tempo-breaker and court-control tool, most effective when opponents are camped at the baseline. Requires touch and court awareness.

Origin: English: 'drop shot', the ball drops over the net just past it.

When to use it

Deployed against opponents who are deep in the court or struggling with depth; draws them forward, opening up the baseline.

Common questions

Is a drop shot risky?

It can be—if the opponent is already at net, they'll put away your drop shot. Use it when they're baseline-bound.

How soft should a drop shot be?

Soft enough to land within a metre or two of the net, with just enough height to clear it; the softer, the better.
