Bathroom Break
What is a Bathroom Break in padel?
Authorized brief absence from the court for bathroom use.
Definition
A bathroom break is an authorized brief absence from the court (typically 5-10 minutes) for a player to use restroom facilities. Bathroom breaks are permitted in professional padel matches and don't count against time-violation limits. However, bathroom breaks are not unlimited; a player cannot take multiple consecutive breaks to disrupt match momentum. The chair umpire determines if a bathroom break request is reasonable and allows it. Upon return, the player must be ready to play within the standard time limits. Excessive bathroom breaks (more than one per set or strategically timed breaks) may be denied by the chair umpire. Some tournaments limit bathroom breaks to changeovers; others allow mid-game breaks at chair umpire discretion. Bathroom breaks are distinct from medical timeouts; bathroom breaks don't require medical justification but are subject to abuse-prevention scrutiny.
Origin: Standard in professional tennis and padel; FIP regulations specify bathroom break rules.
When to use it
Allows necessary personal care without time penalties.
