Authorized break (typically 3-5 minutes) for a player to receive medical attention.
Definition
A medical timeout is an authorized break of 3-5 minutes during a match when a player requires medical assistance (injury treatment, medical examination, equipment adjustment due to injury). Medical timeouts are distinct from regular changeovers and are separate from time-violation counting. A player may request one medical timeout per match (in some tournaments, multiple are allowed). A physician or medical staff member examines the player and determines if treatment is necessary. Medical timeouts are not unlimited; prolonged treatment results in denial of the timeout and may lead to a retirement (withdrawal). A medical timeout does not reset the match momentum; play resumes where it left off. Medical timeouts are regulated to prevent abuse (strategically using them to gain psychological breaks). Professional tournaments have strict medical timeout protocols and require on-court medical staff.
Origin: Standard in professional tennis and padel; FIP regulations specify medical timeout rules.
Allows injury treatment without time penalties; fundamental to player safety.
Typically 3-5 minutes. If treatment requires more time, the player may retire from the match.
Possibly, depending on tournament rules and medical staff assessment. Abuse can result in denial.
