Return aggressively to disrupt server's serve-plus-1 pattern, then construct offensive opportunities.
Return-plus-1 is the returner's answer to serve-plus-1. While the server has a structural advantage, the returner can neutralize or even flip this advantage through aggressive returning and intelligent follow-up. The pattern is: aggressive return → read server's movement → transition forward if possible → finish with aggressive volley or passing shot.
The key to return-plus-1 is aggressive returning. This doesn't mean hitting the ball harder; it means hitting a return that creates pressure. A return hit early, hit to a difficult location (middle, alley, or weak side), or hit with unexpected pace disrupts the server's serve-plus-1 rhythm.
After returning, the returner must read the server's movement to net. Is the server moving forward confidently? Are they hesitating? This reading determines the returner's next action. A confident server requires a passing shot or lob. A hesitating server might create a transition opportunity.
If the return is strong and the server's first volley is weak, the returner should transition forward aggressively. This is where the returner flips the dynamic—instead of defending from baseline, they're attacking from mid-court or net.
The return-plus-1 pattern is why some returners are extremely dangerous. They don't just return consistently; they return aggressively and construct follow-up aggression. This puts enormous pressure on servers and can flip the point momentum.
One nuance: return-plus-1 is higher-risk than serve-plus-1 because the returner is starting from a disadvantageous position. This means the returner needs great returning technique and tactical intelligence to make the pattern work consistently.
Every time you return serve, especially on important points or break-point situations.
How do I return more aggressively?
Return early, aim for difficult locations (middle or alley), vary pace, and commit fully to the shot.
When should I transition forward after returning?
When the server's first volley is weak or short. If they hit a solid first volley, stay baseline and pass.
