Footwork and technique drills performed without a ball, allowing players to focus on movement patterns, swing paths, and ready-position recovery
Definition
Footwork and technique drills performed without a ball, allowing players to focus on movement patterns, swing paths, and ready-position recovery. Shadow drills are particularly valuable for improving split-step timing and directional first-step quality.
A player executes a sequence of movements (e.g., split-step, lateral shuffle, forehand shadow, recover) on a court or flat surface while a coach calls the direction. No ball is used.
15–20 minutes before each practice session builds footwork habits effectively. Shadow work is also a great off-court training option when no court is available.
