Pre-rehearsed rally sequences designed to set up offensive opportunities.
Definition
Pattern play is the deliberate construction of repeatable, rehearsed rally sequences designed to move opponents out of position and set up finishing shots. A pattern might be: 'serve to the deuce court, then hit cross-court on return, forcing opponent wide, then hit down-the-line winner.' Patterns are planned pre-match or mid-match and executed consistently until opponents adapt. Great teams have 4–6 core patterns they execute constantly. Patterns build confidence—players know exactly what's coming and where to move. Opponents eventually read patterns, so adaptation and creativity are essential.
Origin: Tactical structure in padel coaching; reflects competitive sophistication.
Throughout match; execute patterns on key points, then adjust if read.
Start with 3–4; master them before adding more. Depth beats breadth.
Switch patterns or use similar-looking setup leading to different finish.
