Building the Point
What is a Building the Point in padel?
Methodical rally construction; accumulate positional advantage toward finishing opportunity.
Definition
Building the point is the strategic process of constructing a rally by exchanging shots that gradually move opponents out of position and accumulate offensive advantages. Each shot is intentional and contributes to a larger plan: shot 1 moves opponent left, shot 2 pulls them even wider, shot 3 creates an opening in the middle or near the net. Building requires patience, discipline, and trust in the process—players don't force winners prematurely. Teams that build points well have high winning percentages because they create clear finish opportunities. Poor point-building (forcing winners from difficult positions) leads to high error rates.
Origin: Fundamental doubles and singles philosophy; central to coaching development.
When to use it
Most rallies; be patient, set up, then finish decisively.
Common questions

As few as possible while ensuring position advantage. Usually 2–4 shots.
What if opponent breaks my pattern?
