Glicko-2

What is a Glicko-2 in padel?

The Glicko-2 rating system used to rank padel players.

Definition

Glicko-2 is the dynamic rating system adopted by the FIP to rank padel players globally. It's an evolution of the Elo rating (from chess) that accounts for player performance, rating deviation (uncertainty), and volatility. Players gain or lose rating points based on tournament results; the system is transparent and widely used in international padel rankings.

Origin: English: 'Glicko' (Glickman), named after Mark Glickman, the rating system creator.

When to use it

Padel players are ranked via Glicko-2 scores; tournament seeding, ranking tables, and competitive pairing all depend on Glicko ratings.

Common questions

How does Glicko-2 differ from Elo?

Glicko-2 includes rating deviation and volatility factors, making it more accurate for players with fewer games or irregular play schedules.

Can my Glicko rating go down?

Yes—losing matches to lower-rated players, or playing below your rating, decreases your score.
