Fault

What is a Fault in padel?

A serve that misses the service box or hits the net without clearing it.

Definition

A fault is an invalid serve. It occurs when the serve lands outside the service box, hits the net without clearing it, or violates serving rules (e.g., overhand, above waist). Two faults result in losing the point. The server gets two attempts; the first fault allows a second serve.

Origin: English: 'fault', an error or rule violation on serve.

When to use it

A fundamental rule—two faults = loss of point. Servers must be accurate and within rule compliance.

Common questions

Is an overhand serve a fault?

Yes—padel requires an underhand serve below waist height. Overhand is an automatic fault.

Can I take a third serve if I fault twice?

No—two faults = loss of point. The opponent wins the point.
