Return with deceptive positioning or technique; hide direction/placement until last moment.
Definition
A disguise return is an unexpected return where the returner's positioning, setup, or technique doesn't clearly signal the intended direction or placement. Example: stand to one side but hit to the other; mimic an aggressive setup but hit defensively; or use unexpected spin. Disguise returns disrupt net partners' anticipation and create passing-shot opportunities. However, disguise is limited by court geometry—highly obvious disguises (like hitting cross-court from way inside the deuce line) are hard to execute. Best disguise involves subtle setup changes and quick racquet movements.
Origin: Deceptive return strategy; requires skill and timing.
Against predictable net teams; disguise returns to prevent poaching.
Subtle disguises work best. Extreme disguises are harder to execute reliably.
