A return of serve with full power and attacking intent, prioritizing pace and initiative over control.
Definition
An aggressive return is a service reception where the returner prioritizes pace, power, and offensive intent, attempting to immediately seize the serve advantage and put pressure on the server. Aggressive returns are character-building strokes—they signal confidence and establish the returner's intent early. This return style requires excellent timing, positioning, and confidence because it carries higher error risk than conservative returns. Aggressive returns are particularly effective against second serves or against servers who favor control over pace. In professional padel, aggressive returners establish psychological pressure early, forcing servers to serve with more caution or adjust tactics. Aggressive returns are signature shots for attacking players who want to dictate rally patterns.
Origin: Fundamental return tactic; terminology evolved from tennis adapted to padel.
Deployed on vulnerable serves or when the returner wants to establish offensive advantage immediately.
On second serves, weak first serves, or when you're confident in your positioning. Avoid against dangerous first serves.
Higher error rates. If you're not positioned perfectly or if the serve is heavy, aggressive returns often result in unforced errors.
