Return with chip (short, slice backhand/forehand); disrupt serve-and-volley rhythm.
Definition
Chip return tactic involves hitting a short, sliced return that lands near the service line or just inside baseline—disrupting serve-and-volley rhythm and forcing the server to extend or retreat. Chip returns work against players expecting deep, topspin returns; the low ball and slow pace interrupt timing. Chip returns also draw the net partner back, creating passing lanes. However, if net partner moves forward aggressively, the chip return is easily attacked from net. Timing and court read are critical.
Origin: Tactical return variation; reflects serve-and-volley counter-strategy.
Against serve-and-volley teams; disrupt rhythm with short chips.
Moderately—good execution surprises server; poor placement is attacked.
Players comfortable with slice technique and court read.
