Master the split-step, the fundamental timing mechanism that prepares you for quick volley reactions. Perfect split-step timing enables quick directional changes and explosive volley responses.
Stand at the net with knees bent, weight balanced on the balls of your feet, racket at chest height.
Watch your opponent's racket preparation, identifying the exact moment they begin their swing.
As your opponent strikes the ball, execute a small hop (3-6 inches high), landing simultaneously with their contact.
Land with feet positioned to move in any direction—slightly wider than shoulder-width for balanced stance.
From the landing position, push explosively off the ground in the direction the ball is traveling.
Use the momentum from your split-step and directional push to reach the ball quickly and execute the volley.
Coach tip
Timing is critical; execute the split-step exactly as your opponent strikes the ball, not before or after.
