Padel requires fast lateral movement. This guide covers footwork patterns, balance, and efficient court coverage.
Lateral footwork is crucial in padel because you move side-to-side more than forward-back. Your footwork starts with the ready position—feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, weight on balls of your feet. When the ball comes toward you laterally, react with small steps. For short distances (3-5 feet), use a small side step. Plant your outside foot and push toward the ball. For medium distances (5-8 feet), use a side shuffle—step-together-step. For long distances (8+ feet), use a crossover step—cross one foot over the other, then open up to face the net. Maintain balance throughout. Many P2 players run too far with small steps, losing balance. Use appropriate step sizes for distance. After moving laterally, plant your outside foot and prepare to stroke. Your weight should be balanced, not all on one foot. Practice lateral footwork without a ball first. Do 20 side steps each direction, then add movement drills.
Should I always use side steps?
No—use appropriate steps for distance. Short distances: side step. Medium: shuffle. Long: crossover.
How do I maintain balance during lateral movement?
Plant your outside foot firmly before stroking. Keep your weight balanced. Avoid leaning too far in one direction.
