Advanced positioning is about anticipation. This guide covers reading court balance, controlling transitions, and court geometry.
Advanced positioning separates A1 from P3 players. Positioning starts with reading the court. When opponent hits a ball, predict where they'll move next. If they hit from the baseline, they'll likely move toward mid-court or net. Position yourself accordingly. Court balance: When both teams are near the baseline, move to mid-court to shorten the court. When both teams are at net, move closer to the net to dominate. When opponent is back and you're forward, you have court advantage—use it. Transitions: Transition moments (moving from baseline to net) are critical. After hitting a short ball, move forward. After hitting a deep ball, stay back. Predict opponent's next move and position accordingly. Diagonal positioning: Position slightly toward the opponent's likely next shot. If opponent is wide, position slightly wider to cover the sideline. If they're in the middle, position middle. Anticipation: Advanced players anticipate before the opponent hits. Watch their body position, grip, and backswing. These reveal their intended direction. Many A1 players win through positioning, not stroke power.
How do I predict opponent's next position?
Watch their body. If they're turning toward sideline, they'll move there. Watch their grip and backswing for clues.
Should I always move to net after hitting short?
Yes—usually. Short balls give you court advantage. Move forward to capitalize. Exception: if opponent has open court behind you.
