When opponents lob, reposition quickly to track the ball height and execute overheads before lobs clear you.
Lobs are common when you're attacking at the net—opponents use them as a desperation recovery or tactical reset. How you position and respond to lobs determines whether they become winners or setup points for you. The key is anticipating the lob early and repositioning backward while tracking the ball's trajectory. Many net players stay in place, waiting for the lob to pass overhead before scrambling to retrieve it. Advanced players, however, recognize lob cues (a short backswing, a lifting motion) and begin moving backward proactively. By moving back and tracking the lob, you maintain a position where you can execute an overhead smash at a higher contact point, before the ball starts descending. This gives you significantly more control and power compared to retrieving a lob that's already falling on the other side of the baseline. Additionally, by positioning yourself to overhead lobs, you deter opponents from using lobs as a consistent tactic. Over time, they'll resort to passes or nets, improving your net domination percentages.
What if the lob is very high and drifts deep?
If the lob clears overhead range, let it bounce and retrieve it from the baseline. Attempting an overhead on a ball above max height risks poor contact.
