The inside-out forehand allows you to attack from a backhand court position, combining movement and power to create winners.
The inside-out forehand is an advanced tactic where you move around your backhand side to hit a forehand drive to the opposite side of the court. This shot is powerful because you're hitting your dominant side while generating momentum from lateral movement. When executed well, it's nearly impossible to defend because the ball is moving away from you at high pace. The setup requires anticipation—recognizing that the ball will land in your backhand zone and deciding early to move around it. This means adjusting your court positioning to allow yourself space to move laterally and load your forehand. The shot is most effective when the opponent expects a backhand and positions accordingly, only to have the ball sail by them in the opposite direction. The risk is leaving your backhand side open—if your opponent attacks the opposite sideline, you may be out of position to defend. Inside-out forehands are therefore best used selectively, such as when the opponent is pulled toward one sideline or when you have a superior forehand. Used frequently, they become predictable and exploitable.
How do I know when to attempt an inside-out forehand?
Attempt it when the opponent is pulled to one side, when they're clearly expecting a backhand, or when you have significantly more time than usual.
