Apply pressure through aggressive shots, short balls, and net positioning; avoid long rallies they thrive in.
Defensive players are dangerous because they keep everything in play and frustrate opponents into errors. Facing a defensive baseliner requires forcing the issue and preventing them from extending rallies indefinitely.
Game plan elements: aggressive serving to prevent easy base returns → short balls and chiquitas to move them forward → quick net transitions to shorten points → avoiding long baseline rallies → pressure patterns that force decisions.
First, serve aggressively. Defensive players often break down under pressure. A strong first serve prevents their extended baseline rally setup. Weak first serves give them time and rhythm to defend.
Second, construct short balls deliberately. Don't hit every shot deep; mix in chiquitas, dropshots, and angled shots. Force the defensive player to transition forward, where they're often weaker than at baseline.
Third, transition to net aggressively. If you're at the net and they're defending, the point is yours. Defensive players are often uncomfortable attacking, so net dominance is valuable. Move forward decisively after short balls or weak returns.
Fourth, avoid the long baseline rally where defensive players thrive. They're patient, consistent, and comfortable grinding. Don't play their game. Force them to adapt to your aggression.
Fifth, be decisive about winner shots. Defensive players often leave opportunities for put-aways. When you see a winner opportunity, take it rather than setting up another chance.
One psychological element: defensive players can frustrate attackers into mistakes. Don't let frustration change your game plan. Stick to aggression and patience—eventually, the defensive player will break or get tired.
When facing patient, defensive opponents who extend rallies.
What if my short balls aren't effective against a defensive player?
Vary placement and depth, or switch to longer, harder rallies designed to pressure them. Mix tactics.
How patient should I be against a defensive player?
Patient in your aggression, not passive. Push the pace but don't panic if they extend rallies. Eventually, they'll break.
