The loop drive is a topspin stroke that creates a high-bouncing ball with penetrating depth, particularly effective against high balls.
The forehand loop drive is a specialized topspin stroke commonly used in padel when you receive a ball at shoulder height or higher. Rather than blocking or slicing, you load your forehand with an exaggerated low-to-high brushing motion, generating massive topspin. The stroke requires a longer backswing than a typical drive and emphasizes the upward finish through the ball. The resulting shot lands deep in the opponent's court with heavy topspin, causing a high bounce that forces them to strike the ball higher. This is particularly effective against opponents who like to hit flat or with light topspin—the heavy spin disrupts their rhythm. The loop drive is also useful when you're pulled wide and need to recover to the baseline; the heavy topspin and depth make it difficult for opponents to attack on the return. The main challenge is consistency—the stroke is more complex than a flat drive and requires practice to execute under match pressure. However, once mastered, it becomes a weapon that transforms defensive situations into neutral or even offensive ones.
When is the loop drive most effective?
Use it against high balls, especially when pulled wide or during extended baseline exchanges where you need to buy time.
