An out-of-court smash that bounces off the back wall or fence after landing, extending play beyond baseline.
Definition
An X3 smash is a specialized overhead smash where the player intentionally hits the ball hard enough and at the right angle that it bounces off the back glass wall or fence beyond the court's playing area. This high-risk, high-reward shot is used when the player wants to finish a point decisively by using the back walls as extended court territory. The X3 designation refers to the three-wall progression (court to glass to further extension). X3 smashes are extremely difficult to execute consistently and are primarily used in advanced play or exhibition matches. When successful, they demonstrate exceptional court awareness and racquet control; when unsuccessful, they result in faults or awkward rebounds.
Origin: Specialized padel terminology; emerged during advanced coaching discussions in Spanish-speaking padel communities.
Rarely attempted in regular play due to difficulty; deployed in exhibition matches or when the player is confidently ahead.
Not really—the risk-reward ratio is poor. Most players reserve it for exhibition or when they're very confident and ahead.
It continues as a live ball. Your opponent can retrieve it, and play continues—adding exciting rally extensions.
