Strategic positioning during transitions from baseline to net or vice versa.
Definition
Transition management is the strategic handling of court positioning when moving between different zones (e.g., baseline to net, or net to baseline). Proper transitions require: planting the feet, small adjustment steps, maintaining balance, and being ready to react to opponent's next shot. Poor transition management (hurrying, losing balance, committing too early) results in being 'caught in no-man's-land' and vulnerable to passing shots or lobs. Coaches emphasize transition discipline: each transition should be deliberate, balanced, and leave you in a ready position. Good transition management is invisible—you never see the player scrambling.
Origin: Fundamental court movement principle; reflects movement quality.
Throughout rally; manage transitions deliberately.
Cone drills, baseline-to-net shuttles, and match-simulation drills.
Hurrying and losing balance; slow down and move deliberately.
