Point Penalty

What is a Point Penalty in padel?

Penalty awarding a point to the opponent for code violations.

Definition

A point penalty is awarded to the opposing player or team for a second code violation within a match. The opponent gains a point immediately upon issuance of the point penalty, regardless of the current game state. Point penalties escalate from warnings: if a player receives a first warning (no penalty), a second code violation triggers a point penalty. Multiple point penalties in a match can accumulate (e.g., 0-15, 0-30). Point penalties are severe and significantly impact match outcomes. Third and fourth violations typically result in game and match penalties respectively. The point penalty is a deterrent against continued misconduct and accelerates the penalty progression. Common reasons for point penalties include repeated unsportsmanlike conduct, repeated time violations, or repeated coaching violations. The chair umpire announces point penalties formally.

Origin: Derived from professional tennis conduct rules; standard in FIP padel.

When to use it

Consequence of continued code violations; significant impact on match score.
