Cover the Lob
What is a Cover the Lob in padel?
Baseline player back-pedals or sprints to reach and defend overhead lobs.
Definition
Covering the lob is a critical baseline responsibility: when net partners poach, close aggressively, or position high, the baseline player must sprint backward to reach lobs and either pass or overhead the ball. Coverage requires excellent court sense, footwork, and overhead technique. A baseline player who fails to cover lobs allows easy point finishes. Covering the lob is psychologically important—it enables aggressive net play because the baseline partner provides safety net. Many coaches drill 'lob recovery' extensively, as it's the most common weakness in aggressive teams.
Origin: Fundamental doubles defense; padel emphasizes lob coverage due to wall height and court size.
When to use it
Whenever partner is at net; watch for lob triggers and react instantly.
Common questions
When do I stop covering the lob?
Only if partner is also at baseline; if partner at net, you must cover every lob.
What's the best lob-coverage footwork?
Explosive back-pedal then plant-and-hit; don't turn your back until certain you can reach it.
