Artificial Turf

What is a Artificial Turf in padel?

Synthetic grass material used as the base layer of padel court surfaces.

Definition

Artificial turf is the synthetic grass material forming the foundation of modern padel court surfaces, typically made from polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) fibers. The turf blade height is usually 12-20 millimeters and is designed to withstand foot traffic, ball impact, and weather exposure. Artificial turf provides consistent ball response, reduces injury risk compared to hard courts, and enables year-round play in all climates. The fibers are anchored to a backing layer that sits on a stabilized base (sand or compacted material). Quality turf resists UV degradation, matting, and color fading. Professional courts use premium turf systems with specialized backing and drainage; recreational courts may use less expensive alternatives. Regular brushing and granule replenishment extend turf lifespan.

Origin: Developed for soccer fields in the 1960s-70s and adapted for tennis and padel courts.

When to use it

Provides the consistent playing surface; affects ball bounce, player traction, and long-term court maintenance.

Common questions

What's the difference between PE and PP turf?

PE is more durable and realistic; PP is more economical. Both are used in padel courts.

How does UV exposure affect artificial turf?

UV can fade color and weaken fibers over time. High-quality turf includes UV stabilizers.
