The Finesse Player
Soft-handed virtuosos who dominate at net through finesse and touch. They finish with feel, not power.
Develop soft touch through thousands of net reps focusing on feel and placement rather than power. Practice drop volleys, angle volleys, and close-range finishes. Develop touch on various surfaces and heights. Move to net early and stay there; your comfort zone is close-range. Serve and volley consistently. Use soft hands to absorb pace rather than generating it. Coordinate with your baseline partner; they hold court while you finish at net. Study net specialists for positioning and touch execution. Your mentality is: finish with precision and placement, not power. Master reading ball trajectories at net to execute touch finishes before opponents expect aggression.
Keep soft-touch players at baseline. Hit deep, aggressive shots that prevent them from getting to net. Attack their backhand baseline with heavy drives. Avoid drop shots that let them practice their comfort zone. Stay at baseline initially; don't let them dominate at net. When they do get to net, hit passing shots through them. Serve aggressively to limit their service-and-volley opportunities. Keep them in extended baseline rallies where power matters more than touch.
Best partner: the baseline builder
Tough matchup: the power player
How do I develop soft touch?
Practice thousands of net reps focusing on feel. Work with a coach on hand relaxation and touch sensitivity. Develop muscle memory for various net situations.
Can soft-touch players beat power players?
Rarely, unless they avoid baseline rallies and dominate at net. They need to serve-and-volley consistently and finish quickly.
