How to play like them

To play like a Serve and Volley Artist, develop a strong, varied serving game first. Practice serve placements that set up your net game—serves to different zones with different spins. Build consistency so your first serve percentage is high. After serving, move forward aggressively toward the net, positioning yourself to volley the return. If the return is weak, finish it immediately. If it's strong, block or deflect it to set up the next volley. This requires quick footwork and volley skills. Return of serve is less critical for this style, but develop a decent return to avoid being completely vulnerable on receiving. Practice transitions so you can advance to the net while maintaining balance. Mix your serving strategy—serve to different zones and with different spins to prevent opponent adaptation.

How to beat them

To beat a Serve and Volley Artist, identify their serving weakness (if any) and exploit it. Return aggressively to prevent them from advancing to favorable net positions. Hit passing shots when they advance—keep them off balance at the net. Occasionally hit return lobs to push them back. Develop a strong first-serve return because much of their game depends on serve effectiveness. If their serving advantage is significant, focus on breaking one of their service games and holding your own consistently. On your service games, prevent them from establishing dominant patterns by returning aggressively and moving forward yourself. Serve and volley artists are often weaker baseliners—extend rallies and grind them down if possible.
