The Return Assassin
Fearless returners who attack first serves, second serves, and everything in between. They treat return as the first strike, not a defensive act.
Aggressive returners thrive on early court positioning and first-strike offense. Develop patterns: return and immediately move forward, ready to volley or drive the next ball. Practice hitting returns from balanced, loaded positions rather than on the run. Target the server's weakness—if they're slow transitioning, pass them; if they rush net, chip and drive. Return with depth initially to set up your aggressive third shot. The key is converting the return into offensive positioning within two shots.
Neutralize aggressive returners with varied serve placement and pace. Mix in aces and unreturnable serves. Use the body on second serve to limit their return options. Hit bigger first serves to take away their early court positioning. Vary the second serve spin—slice, kick, flat—to disrupt their timing. Serve and volley against weak returns to take away their transition advantage. Finally, when they do return aggressively, attack their return landing and finish before they can consolidate court position.
Best partner: the serve specialist
Tough matchup: the serve specialist
How do I return an ace consistently?
Perfect returns don't stop aces. Instead, work on reading serve placement early, positioning inside the baseline, and taking a compact swing. Aggressive returns will be errors—that's acceptable at this level.
Should I return aggressively on second serve?
Yes, second serve returns are your best offensive opportunity. Attackers position inside the baseline and look to convert weak serves into winners immediately.
