How to drill the Rulo

  1. 1

    Select the right situation

The rulo is played when a lob sits up mid-court or near the service line, with opponents out of position on one side. It's not a defensive reset — it's a winner attempt.

  2. 2

    Exaggerated inside-out rotation

More extreme than the vibora: the racket comes across the ball in a near-horizontal plane. The swing path goes from your right side to your left (for a right-hander), brushing the ball sharply outward.

  3. 3

    Target the far side glass

The rulo goes wide, targeting the side glass low and fast. It should bounce off the glass at an angle that pulls opponents into the corner. A straight rulo is a missed rulo.

  4. 4

    High racket speed at contact

The rulo requires more racket speed than the vibora to generate enough side spin. If the swing is slow, it comes out as a flat shot without the curve. Accelerate through the ball.

  5. 5

    Commit or switch to vibora

The rulo is committal — if you start the motion, finish it. A half-attempted rulo becomes a frame shot. If you read that the ball has dropped too low, switch to a vibora instead.

Coach's tip

Most club-level players don't need the rulo. Master the vibora first. The rulo is the same spin, more extreme — add it after your vibora is consistent at A1 level.
