The volley is struck before the ball bounces. Net play is where padel points are won — mastering the volley is the fastest route to improving your win rate.
Manchester, the North's business hub, operates 42+ padel courts. Growing urban sports culture supports steady expansion. Modern facilities attract corporate membership.
Top clubs:
Net position
Stand 1–1.5m from the net, weight forward on the balls of your feet. Feet shoulder-width apart, racket held at chest height in front of you. Anticipate — don't wait.
Short punch motion
The volley is not a full swing. Use a short, punchy motion — think 'block and direct' rather than 'swing through'. Long backswings at the net produce errors.
Racket face stays open for low balls
For low volleys (below net height), open the racket face upward to generate lift and keep the ball in court. A flat racket on a low volley goes into the net.
Step into the ball
When possible, step toward the ball with your opposite foot as you strike. This transfers weight forward and adds natural pace without a longer swing.
Place the volley, don't power it
A volley placed at a player's feet is more effective than a hard volley at their body. They can block pace; a ball at the feet is physically hard to return cleanly.
Coach's tip
Every point you win should start with your team at the net. Every volley drill should reinforce getting to the net and staying there.
Where can I practice the Volley in Manchester?
Most top Manchester clubs offer court time suitable for Volley drills — Manchester Padel Club, North West Padel Centre, City Centre Padel are good starting points. Many clubs also offer private coaching for technique work.
How often should I drill the Volley?
For steady improvement, practice the Volley 2-3 times per week in 15-minute focused blocks. Complement with match play so the shot becomes instinctive.
